Finally! A Film about Jewish Pirates! Announcing a Dramatic Short about an Obscure Piece of Inquisition-era History.
OxRock Productions, LLC is embarking on a quest to make the world’s first film about Jewish pirates. The dramatic short, written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Arnon Z. Shorr, will raise awareness about the little-known role of Jewish pirates in maritime history.
“The Pirate Captain Toledano” introduces Jewish pirates to the screen – swashbuckling adventurers whose motives run deeper than gold or plunder. Cast out by the Spanish Inquisition, these pirates take refuge on the high seas and seek revenge by assailing the Spanish fleet. “It’s astonishing,” says Shorr, “That Jewish pirates are so profoundly absent from popular pirate mythology.
Their history is so vibrant, their characters are so rich, and their stories are so full of human drama.” To fund the project, OxRock is accepting tax-deductible contributions through a crowdfunding campaign on Jewcer.org. The campaign has already raised a significant portion of funds from over a hundred supporters, and has a few days remaining before the deadline.
Supporters can earn a variety of perks, ranging from a sneak-peek of the script to dinner in Los Angeles with the filmmakers. The Ocean Institute in Dana Point, CA, where the film will be shot, has contributed various perks as well. Ocean Institute perks include whale watch tickets, a private tour of the tall ship “Pilgrim” (for 25 people), or a catered (possibly Kosher) dinner for twenty on the deck of the tall ship.
