Omega Pictures went live on Facebook today to kick off a crowdfunding campaign for their latest project, Day 7, an alternate-world sci-fi/fantasy short the filmmakers hope will serve as proof of concept for a deep pool of material. The campaign is headed by producer Deja Brandeis, whose documentary about the Nashville Rollergirls premiered at the 2012 Nashville Film Festival, and writer/director Hunter Perschbacher, regular participant and award-winner in the 54 Film Fest and the 48-Hour Film Project.
To the filmmakers, Day 7 provides an opportunity to showcase one of many stories from a world the director has been developing for the past decade. According to Perschbacher, “It’s a crazy world, with time-travel, steampunk elements, and cosmic magic. With Day 7, we saw a chance to show a corner of this world, and see this really interesting story unfold.” Says Brandeis, “With Day 7, we wanted to do something with a compelling story and a lot of character development, but also show this big, rich, fantastical world; something that isn’t just your everyday setting.”
In order to raise the funds needed to achieve something of this scope, Omega Pictures turned to crowdfunding staple Kickstarter. “Kickstarter is the gold standard. It gets the most traffic, and has steered a vast amount of support toward creators”, says Brandeis. “We know we’ll reach the partners we’re looking for on Kickstarter.” Omega Pictures turned to long-time collaborators to flesh out the cast and crew. Charity Spencer, Production Manager at NuMynd studios, adds her talents as Casting Director and lead actress.
Spencer’s relationships and reputation in the Nashville film sphere have enabled her to bring a talented group of local actors into the cast. Rounding out the team are director of photography Derek Oxford, whose credits include the three latest videos from country standouts Old Dominion; editor Garrett DeLozier, fresh off of editing HGTV’s Nashville Flipped and Kenny Chesney videos for Nashville post-house Forward; and Corey Pierno, with stunt credits on everything from The Wolf of WallStreet to Boardwalk Empire.
The Kickstarter campaign launched on September 14th, and concludes October 12th at 11:59pm. Upon conclusion of the campaign, production design begins in earnest. Production is set for winter 2017, with an early May release.
